Hello. Elder Scrolls is about the only thing on this universe I can confidently nerd about. So here it is.

Did you know that the Dwemer enslaved the Snow Elves (Falmer) through trickery and they became the lurking monsters we fight in Skryim? Through the Merethic and First Era, Snow Elves, or Falmer, inhabited Skyrim. The Nords started migrating down from Atmora (the land north of Tamriel). They lived harmoniously for a while, but then the elves destroyed and killed an entire Nord settlement (no one knows for sure why, but suspect they wanted power of the Eye of Magnus, which the Nords had at that time). This Nord settlement was occupied by Ysgramor who retreated with the survivors after the initial attack, but then went on to rally more Nord troops and wipe the elves out by the thousands. The ensuing battles were what established Skyrim as the Nord’s land. As times grew desperate for the surviving elves, they looked to the Dwemer for help. The Dwemer lived under the land and were generally mysterious but known for their technological advancements and knowledge. The Dwemer agreed to protect the Falmer and let them in their underground realm. It was a trick, however, as the Dwemer fed them toxic mushrooms that slowly made the elves go blind and thus completely dependent upon the Dwemer to live. When the Dwemer disappeared (the circumstances around this disappearance are unknown but highly speculated upon), the snow elves survived and evolved into the unfortunately hostile Falmer we know today, in 4E Skyrim.

So - there’s a free TES app coming out on iOS. It’s relatively straightforward mobile game. It’s called Blades, so I was like, huh, I wonder if this is canon? and poured too much time into researching it. Yes. It’s canon. Here’s why:

Here’s a brief history of the Blades (due to brief research - I’m at work after all): The Blades have been around for many eras, protecting the Dragonborn (I need more details on their formation and purpose, actually). We see the fall of the Blades in Oblivion - they were meant to protect Uriel Septim VII, who we see get assassinated at the beginning of game, in the sewers by the Mythic Dawn (…yes, this means Uriel Septim was Dragonborn - cool huh!). So Titus Mede became emperor next (beginning of the Mede dynasty) but he was not Dragonborn, so the Blades just kinda hung out. There was a big war directly after the Oblivion Crisis (so, after the game of Oblivion, before Skyrim) in which, basically, the Aldmeri Dominion tried to take over everything (as high elves are aught to do). To end the battle, those in opposition created the White Gold Concordant (re: the white gold tower in Cyrodil). Part of this agreement meant disbanding the Blades. (fun fact, this was also what banned the worship of Talos - the ninth “devine” - who was man turned aedra, and dragonborn.) In Skyrim, the Blades reform to help the Dragonborn in Skyrim defeat Alduin, World Eater.

So the mobile game: I am guessing it takes place after the Great War, but is Pre-Skyrim. The Blades were disbanded (aka forced into hiding), and you play one of the Blades. Given the flags and symbols in the game, they know it’s the Mede Dynasty because of the black dragon (Septim dynasty was red), and there are Aldmeri Dominion symbols as well, because of their influence during that time. People speculate it takes place in Cyrodiil because of Ayelid ruins, as well as appearances of skeevers and goblins (which we see in Oblivion), but that’s not clear. Some say it looks modeled after Arena, the first TES game.

Additionally, since I’ll be purchasing ESO here pretty soon, I should explain _why_ I’ll be doing so, since I was so vehemently against it to begin with. I’ll do that later today, though. Stay tuned. In the mean time, feel free to also be a nerd, or leave this channel :kissing_heart:

My primary reason for not accepting ESO as canon initially, was the arranged alliances. The Aldmeri Dominion, The Daggerfall Covenant, and the Ebonheart Pact. In known history, many of the races that seem to have formed alliances during this time would have and should have hated each other (see: Dunmer enslaved Argonians). But if you look at a break out of race and location on a map, you’ll see that they banded together based on geographical convinience. If two races were to band against a cause, would it make sense to work together from across a continent? I also read the following, which I thought was interesting: Ebonheart Pact: Dunmer, Agonians, Nords > this is an alliance of convenience. All three races would prefer to be alone, so they stuck together to fight everyone else off. Daggerfall Covenant: Bretons, Redguards, Orcs > this alliance banded together over the appreciates of stable economy and trade, which was lost during the Interregnum Admeri Dominion: Bosmer, Altmer, and Kajiit > Three of the oldest races on Tamriel seem to agree that the Imperial race keep messing things up, stupid humans, so they want to fix that. It’s important to note that the events of the game take place in the 2nd era during the Interregnum. This time is largely unrecorded in history, given the chaos that occurred. It was easy to create conflicting accounts of experiences. A lot of what is quoted, as far as visuals from the 2nd Era, come from the Pocket Guide to the Empire, which everyone should know was flamboyantly written by a highly opinionated dude who notably hated the Aldmeri Dominion. (Additionally, a commonly quoted bad visual is that Cyrodiil is supposed to be “vast jungles”, but how silly would that have been for developers to create? A jillion trees here to overload your computer and ruin your gameplay…) A lot of what we know are from in-game books, and just like in real life, books are written by unreliable narrators. Conflicts will happen and have happened in every single game. The amount of lore that _is_ in line and _is_ accurate is more than I can get into here (I almost started typing away about Mannimarco…) So, with that, Imma go purchase ESO :v:

that’s probably what I’ll do. Is the world pretty big? Is there a lot of sandbox-type exploring and meandering? I’ve never actually played and MMO, so it is all super new. I’m into the lore (obviously) and storylines and world exploration and characters.

Odahviing - my betta fish - needed a dragon name, given the resemblance fish have to dragons (scales. really. is all.). Odahviing is a pivotal player to the Dragonborn in Skyrim. He was initially the right-hand of Alduin, World-Eater. He was killed during the Dragon War, but Alduin revived him during the Dragon Crisis in 4E 201. The Dragonborn lures and captures Odahviing in Dragonsreach, trading his release for taking the Dragonborn safely to Skuldafn. Odahviing is ultimately impressed by the Dragonborn’s ability and, after Alduin is defeated, pledges his loyalty to the Dragonborn.

Alfiq - my boy cat - is named after a breed/morph of the Khajiit race. The physicality of a Khajiit is dependent upon the phases of the moons (Masser and Secunda) on the day they are born. There are 17 distinct breeds, some more human and others more cat. Certain breeds will be found more commonly in certain lands (Suthay-raht, for instance, is often found in Morrowind). Alfiq is most similar to what we know as a housecat. They can’t speak a known language, but they understand when spoken to. They’re known to be magic-users and sometimes wear clothes (though are unable to put the clothes on themselves).

Kynareth - my girl cat - is named after one of the imperial nine divine. (NINE divine dang it freaking altmer.) She is the goddess of the sky, wind, heavens, etc. Spriggans are said to represent her wrath. She is also invoked for good luck (especially for sailors, for obvious reasons). Her verse is: _Come to me, Kynareth, for without you, I might not know the mysteries of the world, and so blind and in terror, I might consume and profane the abundance of your beautiful treasures._

I tried to play all weekend, but I always got started too late and downloading a jillion things is not FAST

Bethany and I should be on tonight. I have a little homework first and she has class until 5:45pm

I’ll probably spend my first day or two getting used to the game and poking around, but I definitely want to join you guys!

So character creation took me a good hour. Ha! But, (and it seems to be a common issue) my mouse sensitivity is NUTS and I absolutely cannot play, even with setting the sensitivity to 0. So I’m spending the rest of my time troubleshooting. Did you guys have similar problems?

Did you set the sensitivity in the game or on your OS?

In game. It’s the only game that’s been effected by crazy sensitivity. I think I need to restart the game each time I adjust the sensitivity but that takes like 10 years.

I think I adjusted mine on the OS first.

Mine started CRAZY high, like it was making me nauseous because it was moving so fast.

Mine is already rather low on OS because I hate fast mice

But yeah I was ultra nauseous trying too play. I couldn’t click anything because I’d zoom past it too fast. I felt just as drunk as the drunk guy on the boat in the intro. The boat was rocking, I was spinning… it was a disaster

Anyway - what kind of characters do you guys have? @Carpe @Bethany Hull I’m still solidifying a backstory for mine since I want to fully understand the game context, but i’ll write up a little bio

I'm Gwenrva!

I’m a Bosmer Warden named Adrwenthia. I named her after a cool Skyrim bosmer character, Adrwen (she’s a follower of Kynareth and also she has a dog), and tacked on “thia” as it is a common end-name convention for most bosmer females in Morrowind. I’ve never played a Bosmer, but I love their wild nature and their hospitality to all other races. They’re pretty neutral, despite being part of the Aldmeri Dominion (they joined because of geographical convenience, their reliance on Altmer sea trade, and their appreciation of the stability of the alliance and their end goal of ensuring the land is ruled with such stability). I hope to focus on archery and healing magic, and other nature things, since she’s a Bosmer. Being that she’s small and nimble, she may also dabble in a bit of thievery here and there - thievery is not entirely looked down upon in Bosmer culture. She’s a very classically focused Bosmer, so she does her best to not harm plants at all and is strictly carnivore. Bosmer only use stone and animal products during daily life (and apparently have a wicked milk-based alcohol, and they smoke bugs.) Like other Bosmer, she is allowed to trade for wood/plant products from other races, as long as she is not the one doing the harm herself, and that the items are not from Valenwood/The Green. She has antlers, which is a common Bosmerian feature. I have yet to decide if she’s really going to seriously focus on the Green Pact and practice cannibalism as part of their religion and pact with the Forest God Y’ffre - “do not kill wastefully”. This practice began to diminish in the second era anyway. Note that Bosmer cannibalilsm does differ theoretically from that of Namira, Prince of Decay. Anyway, Adrwenthia is super rad and I already love her. She goes by Adrwen for short. I’m stoked to develop her backstory and character!

The Bosmer in the early early years, made an oath the Y’ffre, their forest diety, because of his support (as a diety). The pact dictated they could only eat meat-based products, pants can’t be eaten or used as building materials, which means no harming trees and plantlife. Basically, it was in respect for Y’ffre and what he’d done for them. In more modern times, Bosmer tend to be less fanatical about following the Green Pact.

Hahah yeah. I guess (I’m not super sure, need to do more research), but the Bosmer as a race used to be able to transform into this “ooze” a massive ultra powerful force and they would battle, basically killing everything and anything, including each other.

Part of the Green Pact was that Y’ffre kept them from that transformation, and also why there is no “wasteful killing” (hence the cannibalism of enemies)

I got the Dawnguard expansion, but the character I’m playing wouldn’t _kill_ the vampires, she’d _join_ them. So I did. (the Dawnguard is a group that bands together to fight the rising legions of vampires in the game, but you can be on either end, and my current evil character would definitely be on the evil end.)

Hammerfell tends to be more desert-y (think of the way the redguards dress), but it’s possible we just don’t see that part. Highrock I think is a great possibility, given it’s known for it’s mountains… _high_ rock The snow capped mountains in the background rule out things like Elsweyr and such, because those are certainly bordering Skyrim.

OMG WOW To "take an arrow to the knee" means to get married according to old Nordic slang, because you get down on one knee to propose. HOLY HECK The memes. The lies. The truth. The mystery. Those male guards weren't being literal. They are family men. FAMILY MEN! they can't adventure cuz they started a family. This changes everything. ... I have to replay the whole game again with this new perspective/understanding. Totally changes the plot.

There’s some guy that works at intuit and his name is Vivek, which is basically Vivec, and I’m suspicious

So I spent a few ~(five)~ hours playing Skyrim yesterday with a new character. I thought I’d be bored of all the intro stuff since i’ve gone through it all but WOW. I know so much more about the world since the last time I started a fresh character. It’s so _immersive_ and fully of history. I just wanted to share that wow I love this game.

Update on Fish Name: I finally have decided my name for him. I mostly call him SwimmyBoi, and that probably won’t change, but his name is for sure *Durnehviir*. This was immediately decided when I witnessed one of my shrimps molting, which they do frequently, leaving little shrimp ghosts behind. Like the souls floating around the Soul Cairn.

Maybe someday I’ll be a Loremaster at Bethesda
