We’re thinking either Upper Leslie Gulch or Succor Creek. I’ve done Upper Leslie and it’s easily one of the most beautiful hikes I’ve ever seen, with a bonus slot canyon you can clamber through at the end. Succor Creek is great for rockhounding. Lots of thundereggs. This one doesn’t have much of an actual trail, it’s more of pick a direction and go.

avatar

Bethany Hull

Thu, May 2, 2019, 9:14 PM

@Lauren Wilkins once we have the thunder eggs, how do we break them open?

avatar

Lauren Wilkins

Thu, May 2, 2019, 9:16 PM

Wed have to take them somewhere for thunder eggs to professionally cut them. Geodes you break with a hammer.

avatar

Bethany Hull

Thu, May 2, 2019, 9:17 PM

... but how do we know they are thunder eggs?

Thundereggs will be heavy. Geodes will be lighter because geodes are hollow. And sometimes you can shake them to listen for loose crystals.

OK Tomorrow morning.... 9:00 ish?

avatar

Lauren Wilkins

Fri, May 3, 2019, 9:47 AM

So it’s a couple hour drive, which we’ll want to plan for. It’s going to be nice on Saturday so we don’t need to worry about heat.

avatar

Lauren Wilkins

Fri, May 3, 2019, 9:50 AM

I’m kinda thinking lets go with Upper Leslie, since I’m familiar with it (and slot canyons are _fun_). I have the book with the hike in it, and it estimates 1:30-2 hr hike. I’m going to estimate a bit longer since one of our goals is rock hounding.

avatar

Lauren Wilkins

Fri, May 3, 2019, 9:51 AM

Driving instructions summarized - near Marsing and the interesction of Hwy 55 and US 95, travel south on US 95 approx 19 miles to a sign on the right for Leslie Gulch Rec area. - basically then there’s a 10 mile drive on terrible dirt roads to the hike.

Lauren Wilkins

Fri, May 3, 2019, 9:52 AM

Also - hope you don’t mind some bushwhacking :grimacing:

Planning a camping trip with a friend who literally never camps and her (_maybe?_) boyfriend, June 21st - 23rd. I promised to take her this summer (:yikes: could be bad she hates Nature so). We’re going to do Bonneville campground for the hot springs, and I’m planning on hiking up eightmile mountain nearby (trailhead is accessible from the campground). If anyone is interested in chilling in the nature that weekend.

Annie Densley

I would say not super likely. They are in the area, but they usually stay away. At least I’ve never seen one when backpacking in that area. You’re much more likely to see deer and elk than a bear.

Took a hike to Elk Meadow this weekend. I’d recommend the hike, it was gorgeous, but definitely bring bug spray, or wear a full mosquito net suit, or maybe even just live in a plastic bubble as the mosquitos here were _insane_. We didn’t realize it was a marshy meadow. Now we know.:skin-tone-2:

Does anyone have a great backpacking pad/mattress they recommend? Needs to be lightweight but also not cause me back pain all night. Not too worried about cost as long as it works well and is comfortable.

Yo I wanna plan me a camping trip, my homies. I want all the peoples. And I'd love to do it at the Chattahoochee National Forest, but that's way too far away. So instead I'm thinking Sawtooth / Stanley / Redfish Lake area. Questions: 1) Which campsites do you recommend? 2) Which trails/hikes do you recommend? 3) Have you actually seen any red fish around there?

1) Alturas (on the good side of the lake) and Grandjean campgrounds are both good. Deadwood I remember being good but haven’t been for some time. If we don’t care about facilities, there’s some pretty neat sites along a trail in which I forget but it’s cool and I’ll try to remember the name. 2) Petit/Toxaway/Yellowbelly/Alice lake trails, Garden of the Giants trail, literally all of them in the sawteeth are great (SAWTEETH) 3) So long and thanks for all the fish (aka we gave all the red fish to space)

1) Alturas, Grandjean, Deadwood, Lola Creek, and Beaver Creek. Wow. Grand. And I gotta say I love creeks. 3) So sad it had to come to this. So long. 2) the sawteeths got it all. which is your fav?

avatar

Lauren Wilkins

2) safe to say, if it’s in the sawteeths or I can _see_ the sawteeths, I love it.

@Lauren Wilkins I can't find anything online about the _Garden of the Giants_ trail. Where is that? It's off the Redfish Inlet trailhead, right?

avatar

Lauren Wilkins

Sat, Aug 3, 2019, 2:52 PM

Yep! You take the boat across to the trailhead. https://www.outdoorproject.com/united-states/idaho/redfish-lake-canyon

Redfish Lake Canyon

In just a little under 10 minutes, the shuttle boat across Redfish Lake deposits hikers at the mouth of the spectacular Redfish Creek Canyon. Trails from the boat dock lead up Redfish Canyon and along both sides of the lake. It is possible to take the shuttle to the inlet and hike back to Redfish Lodge (a different adventure), or to spend the day exploring the Redfish Lake Canyon and catch an afternoon boat back across the lake. Boat shuttles can be scheduled and paid for at the Redfish Boat Dock.

How many people are camping? Because if people have big tents and will carpool, you can fit like 4 people in a single-car camp spot. (unless everyone only has 2 person or single tents maybe?)

I think the trails up Bogus Basin rd would have trees with fall colors. Stack Rock trail starts at mile marker 13 up Bogus Basin rd, hard to beat that for an easy hike. And you could go all the way up to Bogus Basin, the trails are free and there’s awesome views. The “Around the Mountain” trail is about 10 miles and really cool, for mountain bikers and hikers.
