We’re thinking either Upper Leslie Gulch or Succor Creek. I’ve done Upper Leslie and it’s easily one of the most beautiful hikes I’ve ever seen, with a bonus slot canyon you can clamber through at the end. Succor Creek is great for rockhounding. Lots of thundereggs. This one doesn’t have much of an actual trail, it’s more of pick a direction and go.

Bethany Hull
Thu, May 2, 2019, 9:14 PM
@Lauren Wilkins once we have the thunder eggs, how do we break them open?

Lauren Wilkins
Thu, May 2, 2019, 9:16 PM
Wed have to take them somewhere for thunder eggs to professionally cut them. Geodes you break with a hammer.

Bethany Hull
Thu, May 2, 2019, 9:17 PM
... but how do we know they are thunder eggs?

Thundereggs will be heavy. Geodes will be lighter because geodes are hollow. And sometimes you can shake them to listen for loose crystals.

Bethany Hull
Fri, May 3, 2019, 8:55 AM
OK Tomorrow morning.... 9:00 ish?

Lauren Wilkins
Fri, May 3, 2019, 9:47 AM
So it’s a couple hour drive, which we’ll want to plan for. It’s going to be nice on Saturday so we don’t need to worry about heat.

Lauren Wilkins
Fri, May 3, 2019, 9:50 AM
I’m kinda thinking lets go with Upper Leslie, since I’m familiar with it (and slot canyons are _fun_). I have the book with the hike in it, and it estimates 1:30-2 hr hike. I’m going to estimate a bit longer since one of our goals is rock hounding.

Lauren Wilkins
Fri, May 3, 2019, 9:51 AM
Driving instructions summarized - near Marsing and the interesction of Hwy 55 and US 95, travel south on US 95 approx 19 miles to a sign on the right for Leslie Gulch Rec area. - basically then there’s a 10 mile drive on terrible dirt roads to the hike.

Lauren Wilkins
Fri, May 3, 2019, 9:52 AM
Also - hope you don’t mind some bushwhacking :grimacing:

Bethany Hull
Fri, May 3, 2019, 10:39 AM

Speaking of coolers - we’ll want to pack lunches - want to just BYOlunch or I can pick up like sandwich making supplies at winco.

Lauren Wilkins

Lauren Wilkins

Perfect! I placed the map marker at the trail head (to my best estimation, I’ll recognize it once we’re there) https://www.google.com/maps/dir/Boise,+ID/43.2933519,-117.2548213/@43.2945825,-117.2547243,2019m/data=!3m1!1e3!4m9!4m8!1m5!1m1!1s0x54aef172e947b49d:0x9a5b989b36679d9b!2m2!1d-116.2023137!2d43.6150186!1m0!3e0
Find local businesses, view maps and get driving directions in Google Maps.

Lauren Wilkins
Fri, May 3, 2019, 11:11 AM
I should say the hike is 4.4 miles out and back. (not sure if that includes the slot canyon or not)

Lauren Wilkins
Fri, May 3, 2019, 12:40 PM
I did some research on the area (I’m trying to get into identification of flora and fauna) and there are 2 plant species that are _only_ found in Leslie Gulch! Packard’s Blazing Star and Etter’s Groundsel. How cool!

Bethany Hull
Tue, May 14, 2019, 1:22 PM
I agree! There’s a long hot springs hike in the Scott Merchant book I’ve been wanting to do. We could make it a camping trip.

Planning a camping trip with a friend who literally never camps and her (_maybe?_) boyfriend, June 21st - 23rd. I promised to take her this summer (:yikes: could be bad she hates Nature so). We’re going to do Bonneville campground for the hot springs, and I’m planning on hiking up eightmile mountain nearby (trailhead is accessible from the campground). If anyone is interested in chilling in the nature that weekend.

Lauren Wilkins
Wed, May 29, 2019, 10:13 AM
ALSO ALSO - if you’re planning on camping with Bethany and I this weekend, please tell us ASAP (like, by today please) so I know how much food needs to be prepared. :evergreen_tree:

New in the area, what are the odds of running into bears around here/that area?

Annie Densley
Fri, Jun 21, 2019, 1:05 PM
I would say not super likely. They are in the area, but they usually stay away. At least I’ve never seen one when backpacking in that area. You’re much more likely to see deer and elk than a bear.

Hsin Wang
Fri, Jun 21, 2019, 1:08 PM
Does that mean you normally don't carry bear spray?

Annie Densley

Correct. I’ve never bought or carried bear spray before. Maybe someone in this channel has?

Bethany Hull

Took a hike to Elk Meadow this weekend. I’d recommend the hike, it was gorgeous, but definitely bring bug spray, or wear a full mosquito net suit, or maybe even just live in a plastic bubble as the mosquitos here were _insane_. We didn’t realize it was a marshy meadow. Now we know.:skin-tone-2:

So instead I'm thinking Sawtooth / Stanley / Redfish Lake area. 1) Alturas (on the good side of the lake) and Grandjean campgrounds are both good. Deadwood I remember being good but haven’t been for some time. If we don’t care about facilities, there’s some pretty neat sites along a trail in which I forget but it’s cool and I’ll try to remember the name. 2) Petit/Toxaway/Yellowbelly/Alice lake trails, Garden of the Giants trail, literally all of them in the sawteeth are great (SAWTEETH) 3) So long and thanks for all the fish (aka we gave all the red fish to space)

Lola Creek campground is always a fun one as well as Beaver Creek. They’re in the same area.

1) Alturas, Grandjean, Deadwood, Lola Creek, and Beaver Creek. Wow. Grand. And I gotta say I love creeks. 3) So sad it had to come to this. So long. 2) the sawteeths got it all. which is your fav?

Lauren Wilkins

2) safe to say, if it’s in the sawteeths or I can _see_ the sawteeths, I love it.

@Lauren Wilkins I can't find anything online about the _Garden of the Giants_ trail. Where is that? It's off the Redfish Inlet trailhead, right?

Lauren Wilkins
Sat, Aug 3, 2019, 2:52 PM
Yep! You take the boat across to the trailhead. https://www.outdoorproject.com/united-states/idaho/redfish-lake-canyon
In just a little under 10 minutes, the shuttle boat across Redfish Lake deposits hikers at the mouth of the spectacular Redfish Creek Canyon. Trails from the boat dock lead up Redfish Canyon and along both sides of the lake. It is possible to take the shuttle to the inlet and hike back to Redfish Lodge (a different adventure), or to spend the day exploring the Redfish Lake Canyon and catch an afternoon boat back across the lake. Boat shuttles can be scheduled and paid for at the Redfish Boat Dock.

@Lauren Wilkins, @Annie Densley, and @Malcolm Jackson -- since you all responded here, you have priority for claiming a reservation at the campground I got for Alturas Lake 16-18th. Are you in?

David Hartsough
Sat, Aug 3, 2019, 3:23 PM
Also, since @Bethany Hull created this channel and is the most active in it (and is the hallowed guru of adventure timez), I feel you deserve a priority spot before I start asking and inviting many others. (I've already got 4 definitely in. and want to fill with another 4 and possibly another 4–8 after that haha)

Okay there is a tent camping which is much less PEOPLE and no RVs on the other side of the lake. But sounds like the bigger more populated is better with the number of people we have?

Lauren Wilkins
Sun, Aug 4, 2019, 4:17 PM
Also @Emily Smith is in

David Hartsough

(But we'll have more than the 8 I paid for, so we'll prolly need another tent campsite anyway)

Lauren Wilkins
Sun, Aug 4, 2019, 5:16 PM
Dope it’s a beautiful lake no matter which side your on. The side you reserved I think has a beach like section.

Camping

Lauren Wilkins
Mon, Aug 5, 2019, 12:03 PM
How many people are camping? Because if people have big tents and will carpool, you can fit like 4 people in a single-car camp spot. (unless everyone only has 2 person or single tents maybe?)

Lauren Wilkins
Mon, Aug 5, 2019, 12:03 PM

David Hartsough

Call the ranger station by where you’re going.

Lauren Wilkins
Thu, Aug 1, 2019, 2:42 PM
Thanks! That makes the most sense. I also just found this site - sounds like stage 1 restrictions are in place, but they’re still allowed as long as it’s in a designated camp site with a metal campfire ring. https://www.fs.usda.gov/detail/okawen/alerts-notices/?cid=fsbdev3_053600

I think the trails up Bogus Basin rd would have trees with fall colors. Stack Rock trail starts at mile marker 13 up Bogus Basin rd, hard to beat that for an easy hike. And you could go all the way up to Bogus Basin, the trails are free and there’s awesome views. The “Around the Mountain” trail is about 10 miles and really cool, for mountain bikers and hikers.
