avatar

Patrick Dodgen

Sat, Mar 2, 2019, 11:48 AM

I learned that the balance between change and stability is tricky. I think TSheets leaned more towards stability even in the face of evidence against it

avatar

Patrick Dodgen

Sat, Mar 2, 2019, 11:49 AM

I'm sure I grew. I got a lot of experience onboarding and mentoring other devs as they joined the org

If you could magically change anything about TSheets, what would you change?

avatar

Patrick Dodgen

Sat, Mar 2, 2019, 1:21 PM

The biggest challenge TSheets has facing it is a people problem. Until the people with the right clout become more accepting and open to change, TSheets will continue to have issues scaling while remaining stable

avatar

David Hartsough

Sat, Mar 2, 2019, 11:55 AM

avatar

That would have been great - now that you are going to clickbank, what is your title and role? can you do that in your new position?

avatar

Patrick Dodgen

Sun, Mar 3, 2019, 2:53 PM

Senior Software Engineer. Currently, the team there is building a new platform from scratch, and the product org is only 30ish people, so I should have a lot more sway in how we build things

avatar

David Hartsough

Sat, Mar 2, 2019, 11:55 AM

Did this experience help you refine your idea of the ideal organization? If so, how has your mind changed about what the ideal organization is?

avatar

Patrick Dodgen

Sat, Mar 2, 2019, 1:22 PM

Yes, It reinforced for me that the ideal organization should provide a space for their employee to act with autonomy and creativity. Locking everyone together in the same monolith reduced those opportunities

Why you should know how much your coworkers get paid

The thought of asking your colleague how much she earns makes you cringe inside, and the same goes for telling her your salary. But pay transparency could benefit employees, organizations and society, says management researcher David Burkus.

avatar

Jesse Fusselman

Mon, Mar 4, 2019, 2:07 PM

I doubt it, I have literally been called into my managers office (at TSheets) because I merely liked a slack post where someone suggested its illegal to tell people you can't discuss pay. If anyone started trying to get people to share salary management would come down hard.

Mon, Mar 4, 2019, 2:07 PM

In my opinion

Malcolm Jackson

At acquisition time, the then CEO, made a post about how we are not allowed to talk about any pay compensation or anything in our acquisition letters in the TSheets general slack channel. One of the employees made a comment about how employee wage discussion is legally protected through the federal government. I liked the post because I also think salary should be a much more open topic. In my next one on one my manager literally brought up how I need to be very careful what kinds of things I like in slack because people, especially senior leadership, notice those kinds of things and I didn't want to put forth the wrong impression.

I think the fear is that people _would_ care? but… really I don’t think many people would (except those who realize they’re getting grossly underpaid, in which case it would end up benefiting them by bringing the unfairness to leadership)

I agree with this (though unlikely we could make it work at this company). I’m 100% certain I and a number of others are underpaid. And, I know someone who deserves to be paid more _and_ is still hourly. >when people don’t know how their pay compares to their peers, they’re actually more likely to feel underpaid…

the other part of this is thinking about salary banding

avatar

Erik A Lopez, IT Professional

Mon, Mar 4, 2019, 2:49 PM

which is another approach to this conversation and one that I also don't like

Mon, Mar 4, 2019, 2:33 PM

It's because there is a really good chance they are underpaid. I read an article on this (I can't find it) but basically its a number game for companies. If salaries are difficult to compare most employees don't know how much they are actually worth, so only a fraction of the employees will take the time to figure out how much their position is worth, of that fraction only some of them will bring it up with their management and of those that bring it up only a small percent are willing to leave over it. The rest just accept it. This means Companies are better off keeping employees in the dark because they only need to worry about a <5% churn because of salary and it is far cheaper to deal with that churn than to pay everyone what they are worth.

avatar

David Hartsough

Mon, Mar 4, 2019, 3:44 PM

> Pay secrecy also makes it easier to ignore the discrimination that’s present in the market today. I think, too, that if a company values diversity (which it should, because the benefits of that are also proven) then this would be a fantastic outlet for demonstrating that. A company could proudly prove their fairness by the numbers, showing salary and benefit comparisons by gender and race. I think that'd be huge for recruitment and employee satisfaction. (I believe TSheets has had some questionable pay/benefit decisions, relating to gender, but transparency could resolve that [whether it's true or not]. Guess I had to bring it back to the channel topic haha)

Erik A Lopez, IT Professional

banding is a range, and it occludes the concept of fair pay for fair work

avatar

Erik A Lopez, IT Professional

Mon, Mar 4, 2019, 4:14 PM

because people will say "I am in the same band as you and do the same work! === equality!"

Today, I would like to tell you the story of the *Intuit Ethics Wheel.* First of all - what, why. why is this a thing. Second of all - here’s what it looks like, for those of you no longer here

The question is at the top, and you spin the wheel to reveal the answer at the bottom. HOWEVER. At first glance, I thought the open answer part aligned with the question _right next to it_. > Accept a vendor gift? _Yes. Integrity without compromise always!_ > Work romance? _We love a funny story!_ > Tell a funny story? _Maybe. Just never with someone who you share a reporting relationship or where there’s a conflict._

Fun, I like this game. I like to think you spin the wheel and the answer changes, so maybe accepting vendor gifts is allowed sometimes depending on the number of times you spin the wheel to try and get a favorable response.
