It did. I told Lance at around 3pm. He took it well, gave me a bit of an exit interview. I took a quick walk to Blake afterwards for nerves. Came back, Lance said that we were going to make that day the last day in the office, but I would still get paid for the two weeks

I learned that the balance between change and stability is tricky. I think TSheets leaned more towards stability even in the face of evidence against it

The biggest challenge TSheets has facing it is a people problem. Until the people with the right clout become more accepting and open to change, TSheets will continue to have issues scaling while remaining stable

Senior Software Engineer. Currently, the team there is building a new platform from scratch, and the product org is only 30ish people, so I should have a lot more sway in how we build things

Yes, It reinforced for me that the ideal organization should provide a space for their employee to act with autonomy and creativity. Locking everyone together in the same monolith reduced those opportunities

Thanks for sharing David I agree and have even felt this at times at TSheets I wonder if the Domino effect would occur here at TSheets if one brave soul decided to post their salary :thinking_face:

I doubt it, I have literally been called into my managers office (at TSheets) because I merely liked a slack post where someone suggested its illegal to tell people you can't discuss pay. If anyone started trying to get people to share salary management would come down hard.

In my opinion

what if I just put out a fake salary that is extremely low or high just to get people talking? Or maybe start a private slack channel and only invite the cool kids?

I think I would have to be delicate but I think it could be done or maybe I am just too optimistic

At acquisition time, the then CEO, made a post about how we are not allowed to talk about any pay compensation or anything in our acquisition letters in the TSheets general slack channel. One of the employees made a comment about how employee wage discussion is legally protected through the federal government. I liked the post because I also think salary should be a much more open topic. In my next one on one my manager literally brought up how I need to be very careful what kinds of things I like in slack because people, especially senior leadership, notice those kinds of things and I didn't want to put forth the wrong impression.

banding is a range, and it occludes the concept of fair pay for fair work

because people will say "I am in the same band as you and do the same work! === equality!"

and that may not necessarily be the case

if the work is the same, so should the pay

I think banding is a step in the right direction

but then who owns the conversation for fair pay?

how do we know?

how can I advocate for more wage if I hit a ceiling?

and what if the next step ie to get to the next band

is not part of what I want to do with my career?

We should pay everyone who works at Intuit the same salary IMO

regardless of title

there are several questions involved about how this should work out in a just fashion

salary should be commiserate with cost-of-living in an area

I am not going to pay someone in New York the same wage as someone in Utah

instead, I equalize across cost-of-living indexes

as long as that is fair and just, things can be normalized

A question I have is this: is there a way to make a good living and provide great value to a company doing something that is seen as a loss leader i.e. if I want to be a team lead or in some sort of support management, can I earn beaucoup bucks specializing in that vs, say, being a BROgrammer?

if the answer is no, why? are soft skills and people skills that easy to master and learn? vs, say, learning how to javascript?

I think there are some vast assumptions made about customer service skills vs highly technical skills

Both present different challenges that require a special skill set to handle

Pay them equally and end it
