I'm making an instagram profile pic for TEDxYouth@Boise. Posting 3 options in this thread. Vote on your fav and throw feedback at it.

Have you tried the text from the second option on the background on the first option?

David Hartsough
Wed, May 8, 2019, 12:56 PM
yee. the white text isn't really legible on that background since there's those goofy white bubbles and lines all over

Malcolm Jackson
Wed, May 8, 2019, 12:58 PM
Another question why is the @ symbol in the first design but not in the others

David Hartsough
Wed, May 8, 2019, 12:59 PM
well, technically that's how TEDx sets their standards for how it should be named. but since it's just a logo image, I don't have to include the @ in the design. The technical name for it _is_ TEDxYouth@Boise

David Hartsough
Wed, May 8, 2019, 1:00 PM
Like, there's a TEDxYouth@Austin and TEDxYouth@Tokyo

David Hartsough
Wed, May 8, 2019, 1:00 PM
that's just the naming convention

I like #3, mostly because I don’t understand what the background image does for the logo.

David Hartsough
Wed, May 8, 2019, 1:10 PM
yee. I feel that. I tried an all black one, and it look wayyy better with some texture instead of all black background.

Lauren Wilkins
Wed, May 8, 2019, 1:11 PM
youth like minimalism

David Hartsough
Wed, May 8, 2019, 1:11 PM
heh. youths. also, the background image has subconscious association with TED talks.. so that's a plus

David Hartsough
Wed, May 8, 2019, 1:17 PM
dang.... everybody has different opinions. even strangers... haha bummer

Lauren Wilkins

While design and art do share many overlapping qualities, they are two fundamentally different disciplines. This can be demonstrated through taking a quick look at the origins, processes, and purposes that design and art serve.

It’s a fascinating idea, I think.

Lauren Wilkins
Wed, May 8, 2019, 2:06 PM
(also, I don’t necessarily agree with everything in these articles. For example, I think design _can_ cause controversy, if that’s its goal)

well... lemme ask this... is all design art? is all art design? which would be a more appropriate channel name?

Lauren Wilkins
Wed, May 8, 2019, 2:22 PM
No. They’re not mutually exclusive, but they’re certainly not the same. I think you can have some art in design, and you can have some design in art. But there are a lot of really key differences that keep them separate

Lauren Wilkins
Wed, May 8, 2019, 2:23 PM
Art tends to be for the artist. Design tends to be for the viewer/user.

Lauren Wilkins
Wed, May 8, 2019, 2:23 PM
Art is open to interpretation, but design often must be more straight forward, since it’s serving a specific purpose

David Hartsough
Wed, May 8, 2019, 2:23 PM
are those people ever the same? (artist = viewer)

Lauren Wilkins
Wed, May 8, 2019, 2:24 PM
They can be, but an artist as a viewer is a different type of viewer than, say, someone walking around in an art gallery

Lauren Wilkins
Wed, May 8, 2019, 2:25 PM
The second link outlines a lot of good differences between the two

Lauren Wilkins
Wed, May 8, 2019, 2:26 PM
art inspires, design motivates. art is interpreted, design is understood. (I don’t agree with them all like art is talent and design is skill… mmm no)

Lauren Wilkins
Wed, May 8, 2019, 2:28 PM
I like the idea that art can mean something different to each viewer, evoking different feelings, emotions, etc… where as design should evoke the _same_ thing, whatever that may be.

David Hartsough
Wed, May 8, 2019, 2:28 PM
huh. i think, by definition, design is intentional, purposeful, planned, etc. whereas art is... confused. hahaha kidding. art is "the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination."

Lauren Wilkins
Wed, May 8, 2019, 2:29 PM
Yeah. Design has a pretty explicit purpose for why it exists. Art is much more nebulous or wide-ranging in it’s purpose.

David Hartsough
Wed, May 8, 2019, 2:30 PM
I'd still argue that all design is art tho.

David Hartsough
Wed, May 8, 2019, 2:30 PM
by that definition

Lauren Wilkins
Wed, May 8, 2019, 2:30 PM
I am _not_ a designer, because I’m never very intentional with the things I create. I almost never plan things out.

Lauren Wilkins
Wed, May 8, 2019, 2:30 PM
Maybe it’s like how a Square is a Rectangle but a Rectangle is not a Square

David Hartsough

David Hartsough
Wed, May 8, 2019, 2:32 PM

Lauren Wilkins
Wed, May 8, 2019, 2:32 PM
Nevertheless, I stand by my idea that art and design are not the same thing. I first delved into this idea because people are confused when I say I’m a terrible designer. And I thought to myself - why am I bad at design? So I went to Google.

Lauren Wilkins
Wed, May 8, 2019, 2:33 PM

Poll/Discussion time! I'm taking a UX/UI Design course right now, and my teacher went on a 30 minute rant about how Apple is not "aesthetically pleasing" anymore, and that everything is boring now. I have my opinions, but I'm curious about everyone else's.

I like Apple’s sleek and easy design. Even their packaging is attractive. When she’s saying “apple”, though, is she talking about the devices themselves, or how apple’s OS/software looks?

Lauren Wilkins
Thu, May 9, 2019, 10:05 AM
I’m curious about the specific points she’s making. I think apple has cleaned up it’s look dramatically recently. (I way prefer the flat design, to, say the weird shiny 3d stuff they had earlier?) I can confirm Android and Microsoft has upped their game recently, too, but Apple is definitely a forerunner in design. So even if she doesn’t like it now, she can’t deny the influence it had on other products

rissa
Thu, May 9, 2019, 10:05 AM
He was ranting about the website design specifically. I think what I'm struggling with is he has a graphic design background, so he's coming from that side. I am more of a UI/UX person, so for me, I am looking for function and usability, while being aesthetically pleasing and beautiful.

rissa
Thu, May 9, 2019, 10:06 AM
And honestly, he didn't really have "points". He just full on ranted about how boring the site was. But again, I believe it's usability is excellent, it's clean and organized. But as designers...should we be pushing the box and be more daring with website design, if we are going for functionality and usability?

Lauren Wilkins
Thu, May 9, 2019, 10:07 AM
I like the simplicity of Apple. People like the high functionality of other products, which is great for people who need that. But Apple excels in “this is what you need, no frills”.

rissa
Thu, May 9, 2019, 10:07 AM
@Lauren Wilkins "So even if she doesn’t like it now, she can’t deny the influence it had on other products". This was actually one of his points, that Apple has made design so sterile.

rissa
Thu, May 9, 2019, 10:08 AM
But I _fully_ disagree. And I love where website, UI design is going. I love the "flat" organized design.

Lauren Wilkins
Thu, May 9, 2019, 10:08 AM
Hmm yeah, I’d argue, is “sterile” wrong? Minimalism is kinda rampant in this day and age. Look at tiny house movement. Marie Kondo. of course that’s going to reflect in our technology too.

rissa
Thu, May 9, 2019, 10:08 AM
Websites have become functional. You go to a website to get something done. It's no longer an art exhibit, for the most part.

Lauren Wilkins
Thu, May 9, 2019, 10:09 AM
I think “minimal” websites can still be beautiful. Some of my favorites are flat, select colors, clean.

rissa
Thu, May 9, 2019, 10:09 AM
BUT, you can still be really fun with design, in your marketing, etc.

rissa
Thu, May 9, 2019, 10:09 AM
yeah!

Lauren Wilkins
Thu, May 9, 2019, 10:09 AM

rissa

Lauren Wilkins

Erik A Lopez, IT Professional
Thu, May 9, 2019, 10:15 AM
I think were the disconnect with this conversation is, and @rissa pointed it out, is the parallax view between a UI designer looking at something and a graphic designer looking at something

Erik A Lopez, IT Professional
Thu, May 9, 2019, 10:16 AM
I really enjoy non-functional web design that is interesting, more thought provoking, and provides a new way to interact or be repelled

rissa
Thu, May 9, 2019, 10:16 AM
agreed, but there is a time and place for that.

rissa
Thu, May 9, 2019, 10:16 AM
I guess I was frustrated that he was ranting about functionality and organization, as this is a UX/UI design course..

Erik A Lopez, IT Professional
Thu, May 9, 2019, 10:16 AM
and I would say that there is never a "time and place" for those things; that they can co-exist. For instance, there is quite a difference in intention and approach to a personal website trying new web technologies and design techniques, vs an e-commerce/business site

Erik A Lopez, IT Professional
Thu, May 9, 2019, 10:17 AM
not mutually exclusive

I just used a colorful and very busy website while I was trying to view results from a biometric screening. David Hartsough
Thu, May 9, 2019, 11:12 AM
@rissa historically, Apple and Microsoft dragged behind with good design patterns, guides, and principles. When Google released Material Design guidelines back in the day, there was a popular opinion among designers that _that_ was the best way to go and Apple needed to step up its game. I've also had a UI/UX teacher express grievances about Apple, but my class was within the context of mobile app design.

David Hartsough

Lauren Wilkins

David Hartsough
Thu, May 9, 2019, 11:44 AM
Got another thing to throw ya way... I recently asked people for feedback on my website: https://fosteringflourishing.org/ And someone said: > "I thought it was incredibly easy to follow and felt very wikipedia like. That said, i would prefer if both you and wikipedia added some color and themes to your design. [...] I personally would like some styling. I understand why you don't have it but i think a touch of aesthetic would be nice." So my question to you all is: *How would you make this site (or Wikipedia) more aesthetically pleasing (with color or "themes" or "styling")?*
Flourishing is the ideal state of well-being, well-living, and thriving; it is growth, fulfillment of needs, and actualization.

My first thoughts: - needs visual breaks (so many words) - keep a consistent font

Lauren Wilkins
Thu, May 9, 2019, 11:56 AM
Because your logo doesn’t have color, I’d be careful with using a color.

David Hartsough
Thu, May 9, 2019, 12:02 PM
do you think a border-like line counts as a "visual break"?

Lauren Wilkins
Thu, May 9, 2019, 12:03 PM
It’s not words, so yes. A line tricks the eyes into a “rest”. I add lines in my documentation for that reason. It breaks it up from being a wall of text. You have a lot more flexibility in web design

David Hartsough
Thu, May 9, 2019, 12:14 PM
So, the interesting thing about this is that I tried to replicate Wikipedia style, since, well, it's extremely "successful" and used by everyone around the world... But it didn't really occur to me that people would believe that Wikipedia's design could be improved upon. ... so that has me asking people about what they think about Wikipedia's design

Lauren Wilkins
Thu, May 9, 2019, 12:19 PM
Headers are not ever links (different colored headers… I think that’s where the font discrepancy is for me)

Lauren Wilkins
Thu, May 9, 2019, 12:25 PM
Also - I feel like you’ve seen this - but I didn’t know Wikipedia had a Manual of Style! Radical: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Manual_of_Style
The Manual of Style (MoS or MOS) is the style manual for all English Wikipedia articles. This primary page is supported by further detail pages, which are cross-referenced here and listed at Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Contents. If any contradiction arises, this page always has precedence. The MoS presents Wikipedia's house style, to help editors write articles with consistent and precise language, layout, and formatting, making Wikipedia easier and more intuitive for users. Plain English works best. Avoid ambiguity, jargon, and vague or unnecessarily complex wording. Style and formatting should be consistent within an article. Where more than one style is acceptable under MoS, editors should not change an article from one of those styles to another without a good reason. Edit warring over optional styles is unacceptable. If a style or similar debate becomes intractable, see if a rewrite can make the issue moot. New content added to this page should directly address a persistently recurring style issue.

Nevermind, that’s a hard question. But I had a professor who told us her favorite font was Helvetica and that’s when I realized fonts were cool and typography was important.

Helvetica was the font of the internet about 5-10 years ago. Still is for a vast majority of the world wide web

Also, instead of >the quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog please let’s use >sphinx of black quartz, judge my vow

Not sure how old this guy is, but he says that Homestarrunner was _just_ before his time...... Dear god. I'm 25 and that _definitely_ was "a bonding point for my friends growing up". I feel like, if this guy had DSL, an AIM account, or a Xanga, then he had to have not "missed out". I guess I'm confused as to how old this guy is. He has to be younger than me.

He says he’s 23 in the article. I missed out on all this, simply because my dad didn’t let us poke around on the internet. _Womp_

Honestly, I feel like he did "miss out" and is still "missing out" haha. I do agree with what he's saying on the whole. But there are still some internet gems to be found if you know the right sources... (Take Crows Crows Crows, for example, who just released "The Club", which is hilarious and amazing. All of their online content is terrific and doesn't care about standards or rules.)

It is the internet, after all.

Huh. > "I envy those who were able to experience them for the first time." Yeah, it is sad he wasn't around for the "first time". But while some sites die, many still exist and can be experienced yet

This definitely feels like a "those were the good old days and I am just sad" post hahaha. But I think it's funny because the internet itself (HTML, CSS, JS) hasn't changed fundamentally, so he's just as capable as ever to create wild west content with personality. Sometimes we award people for this still, like the Webby Awards. https://www.webbyawards.com/ (gotta dig through the mainstream stuff to find gems)

And that was created in part by a guy who is still making ridiculous content with personality: ze frank http://www.zefrank.com/

Haha I guess I'm wishing he wrote this as a call to action of "hey, I wanna take the time to celebrate and pay tribute to the amazing pieces of the internet out there with personality! Let's make more of that!" Instead of "everything used to be cool, but now I just look at social media all day and that's it so I'm bummed"

I didn’t read it like that, I just read it as an interesting examination of how the internet evolves

Also, like, this guy should really get into memes. Because that is a side of the internet that exists and is very much it’s own thing.

You should re-write the article.

You should release your mememetics paper into the wild west of the internet

the internet is a prime example of mimesis.

(sorry if I misrepresented this author and his work. I think I was still recovering from the terrifying notion that a writer from Invision just said that Homestarrunner was before his time. I'm not that old. Or am I? Wut.)

I'm designing really simple promo images for my new band (think "groovy desert rock with 90s college rock/jangle pop" or "music that a high desert in the PNW would produce") Vote for your favorites in the thread: https://photos.app.goo.gl/9wmk82UERL5DPihJ9

Haha deal! I am digging the design. I like the first one and the last one the most but what do you think about photoshopping out the house in the background and tossing in blue sky or a sunset?
